SKIN IN THE GAME //
The New Conversation Around Sunscreen
Recent attention has focused on advancements in sunscreen
technology, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval
of bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S) in June—the 昀椀rst new sunscreen ingredient
approved for public use in the United States in more than two decades.
While innovations continue to improve skincare options, experts agree
that the most important factor remains consistency. The best sunscreen
is the one you apply regularly and reapply throughout the day.
Dermatologists generally recommend broad-spectrum sunscreen with
a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 50 or higher, particularly for women who
spend signi昀椀cant time outdoors. Newer products are designed to feel
lighter, blend more naturally into the skin, and work seamlessly within
everyday beauty routines.
SIMPLE HABITS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
You don’t need a complicated routine to protect your skin.
Small daily habits can have a lasting impact:
• Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading
outdoors
• Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after swimming or
sweating
• Protect your lips with an SPF lip balm
• Wear a hat to shield your face, scalp, and ears
• Choose long-sleeved performance apparel during extended
outdoor activities
• Wear polarized sunglasses to help protect your eyes
The Damage You Can’t Always See
Most women recognize the discomfort of a sunburn, but the e昀昀ects
of sun exposure often extend much deeper. Ultraviolet radiation
contributes to premature aging, discoloration, loss of skin elasticity, and
an increased risk of skin cancer. Many of these e昀昀ects develop gradually
over years, making prevention especially important.
What often surprises people is how cumulative sun damage can be.
A few extra hours outdoors each week may seem insigni昀椀cant, but
those hours add up over time. That’s why skincare professionals
encourage women to view sun protection the same way they view
exercise or healthy eating—as a lifelong wellness habit.
• Stay hydrated throughout the day.
THE SMARTEST WOMEN ON THE WATER COVER UP
Take a look around any marina and you’ll notice a trend—the people
who spend the most time outdoors are often the most protected.
Experienced boaters know sunscreen is only one part of the equation.
Many combine sunscreens with wide-brimmed hats, polarized
sunglasses, lightweight performance clothing, and strategic shade breaks
throughout the day.
Modern sun-protective clothing o昀昀ers comfort, breathability, and
moisture-wicking performance while providing an additional barrier
against harmful rays. For active women who enjoy boating, 昀椀shing,
paddleboarding, or simply relaxing dockside, these garments have
become a summer essential.
BEAUTY,
WELLNESS &
CONFIDENCE
For Coastalpolitan women, skincare is about more
than appearance—it’s about self-care, wellness, and
protection to continue enjoying the lifestyle and people
we love. The Gulf Coast o昀昀ers some of the country’s most
beautiful outdoor experiences and with a few thoughtful
precautions, Heliophiles can enjoy every sun-splashed
adventure while keeping their skin healthy for years to
come.
After all, glowing skin isn’t just about the products
on a vanity. Sometimes it’s as simple as reaching for the
sunscreen before leaving the dock. ◆

WHY THE WATER INCREASES EXPOSURE
Women who love boating should be especially mindful of the
sun’s e昀昀ects. Water re昀氀ects ultraviolet rays, meaning your skin
may receive exposure from above and below at the same time.
Even cloudy days o昀昀er little protection, as ultraviolet rays can easily
penetrate cloud cover.
Unlike a quick walk or a few minutes running errands, a day
on the water often means several consecutive hours of exposure.
What begins as a relaxing cruise can quickly become six or eight hours
under an intense summer sun.
